So That God May Be Glorified in All Things

Living Faithfully When the End Is Near

1 Peter 4:11 (Lesson 10 Day 5)

It’s possible to do the right things for the wrong reasons.

To speak well, but want to be noticed.
To serve faithfully, but want to be appreciated.
To give, help, lead, or teach—and still quietly hope it reflects back on us.

Peter brings all of that into focus with a simple structure:

“If anyone speaks…
If anyone ministers…”

Two broad categories.
Everything we do fits somewhere inside them.

And then he gives the standard:

Speak as the oracles of God.
Serve with the strength God supplies.

But he doesn’t stop there.

He tells us why:

“…that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.”

That’s the center.

Not effectiveness.
Not recognition.
Not even usefulness.

Glory.

Peter reminds us that our words are not our own to shape however we like. They are to reflect what God has said. And our strength is not something we generate on our own—it is something we receive and rely on.

Which means that when we speak well or serve well, the credit does not stop with us.

It moves past us.

Everything in the Christian life is meant to point somewhere beyond the Christian.

A Personal Reflection

This verse presses on something I don’t always want to examine: my motives.

It’s easy to assume that if I’m doing something good, the reason behind it must be good too. But Peter doesn’t let me stay there.

He asks a quieter question:
Where does this lead?

When I teach, am I trying to be clear—or impressive?
When I help, am I trying to serve—or be seen as helpful?
When I lead, am I pointing people to God—or drawing attention to myself?

Peter doesn’t accuse—he redirects.

He reminds me that my life is not meant to terminate in my own effort or identity. It is meant to pass through me and land on God.

If someone walks away remembering me, I’ve only gone halfway.
If they walk away seeing God more clearly, I’ve done what Peter is calling me to do.

Prayer Prompts

Faithful Speech
Lord, guard my words so that I speak what is true and honoring to You.

Dependence
Teach me to serve in the strength You supply, not my own.

Motives
Search my heart and reveal where I seek recognition instead of Your glory.

Alignment
Help me direct every action toward You, not toward myself.

Worshipful Living
Let my life, my work, and my service become a reflection of Your glory through Christ.
