The Providence of God

03-01-2026 Allen Isbell – “Providence of God”

God’s providence is active and continuous. The speaker defines providence as God’s ongoing involvement in the world and in human affairs, which directly contrasts with the Deist belief of a distant creator who simply “wound up” the world and left it alone. He distinguishes between “general providence,” which is God’s care for all of creation, and “special providence,” which is God’s specific guidance for individual believers.

God directs our paths for our ultimate good. While humans may plan their own courses, God ultimately establishes their steps and works all things for the good of those who love Him. The speaker illustrates this through the biblical story of Joseph, demonstrating how God can take actions meant for evil and use them for a good purpose. On a personal level, the speaker attributes his unexpected 49-year tenure as the minister of his congregation to this divine guidance, noting that his original plans to live his life in Abilene were changed by God’s providence directing him to Galveston.

Providence works alongside human free will, not against it. The sermon emphasizes that Christianity rejects fatalism, which is the idea that everything is predetermined and completely out of human control. Instead, providence does not negate free will. Because humans have a choice, human free will can sometimes frustrate or overcome God’s providential plans. The speaker uses the story of the rich young ruler to show how an individual might refuse God’s calling due to their own personal attachments. Ultimately, God’s providence may bring a person right to the threshold of a relationship with Him, but the individual must use their free will to “open the door” and accept it.
