1 Peter 1:1–2 (Lesson 1, Day 1)

There are seasons in life when we feel out of place.

Sometimes it’s cultural pressure. Sometimes it’s grief, uncertainty, or the quiet realization that our values no longer fit neatly with the world around us. We may not use the word, but we feel it—we are sojourners, living in a place that no longer feels like home.

That is exactly where Peter begins his letter.

Writing to Christians scattered across the Roman world, Peter does not first address their hardships. Instead, he addresses their identity. Before he speaks of suffering, endurance, or hope, he reminds them who they are.

They are elect—not accidental or forgotten, but known by God according to His foreknowledge. They are sanctified by the Spirit, set apart for God’s purposes. They are called into obedience, not as a burden, but as a response to grace. And they are bound to God through the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ—a covenant that is holy, costly, and secure.

Peter calls them sojourners, not to discourage them, but to reassure them. Feeling out of place is not a failure of faith; it is often evidence of it. God’s people have always lived this way—present in the world, but not defined by it.

To believers who feel scattered, pressured, or overlooked, Peter offers quiet certainty:

You are not accidental. You are chosen, known, set apart, and cleansed.

Your circumstances may feel unstable, but your identity is not.

A Personal Reflection

When I read Peter’s words, I think about the times I’ve felt spiritually or emotionally out of step—when convictions felt costly, or when faith placed me at odds with the expectations around me.

Peter reminds me that displacement is not a sign of God’s absence; it is often the mark of belonging to Him.

My identity is not rooted in where I live, what I achieve, or how well I fit in. It is rooted in who has called me.

God’s foreknowledge tells me I am not forgotten.
The Spirit’s sanctification tells me I am not ordinary.
Christ’s blood tells me I am not my own.

When I remember that I am a sojourner—not a permanent resident—I stop trying to force comfort from a world that cannot give it. Instead, I learn to walk faithfully, with purpose and hope, toward a better home.
