1 Peter - A Sketchbook - Lesson 7
1 Peter 3:10–11 (Lesson 7 Day 4)
Peter pauses his instruction and reaches back into the Scriptures, quoting from Psalm 34. By doing so, he reminds his readers that the path of faithful living has always been the same.
“If you want to love life and see good days,” the Psalm says, certain habits must shape your conduct.
First, guard your speech. Words have enormous power to heal or to harm. A life that reflects God’s will begins with disciplined speech—refusing deceit, cruelty, or careless words.
Second, turn away from evil. This language suggests a deliberate change of direction. Faithfulness is not simply avoiding obvious wrongdoing; it involves choosing a different path when temptation appears.
Third, do good. Righteousness is not passive. It requires intentional action—seeking opportunities to reflect God’s goodness in everyday life.
Finally, pursue peace. Peter’s wording is active and determined: seek peace and pursue it. Peace rarely happens by accident. It grows when people intentionally restrain pride, practice patience, and work toward reconciliation.
Peter’s point overturns a common assumption. Many people imagine that a “good life” comes from comfort, success, or favorable circumstances. Scripture describes it differently.
A good life is one aligned with God’s will—formed through disciplined speech, righteous choices, and a sincere pursuit of peace.
A Personal Reflection
When I think about what makes a good day, my mind often goes to things going smoothly—plans working out, problems staying small, and conversations staying pleasant.
Peter challenges that definition.
According to Scripture, a good life is not measured by how easy the day was, but by how faithfully we walked through it.
Did my words build others up or tear them down?
Did I turn away from what I knew was wrong?
Did I actively look for ways to do good?
Did I pursue peace—even when pride made it difficult?
Those questions remind me that a good life is not accidental. It grows from daily choices that align with God’s character.
Prayer Prompts

Direction: Give me the courage to turn away from what dishonors You.
Action: Help me actively seek opportunities to do good today.
Peace: Teach me to pursue peace with patience, humility, and persistence.
Alignment: Shape my daily choices so that my life reflects the goodness You bless.
