Addiction is a Bad Thing by Joe Barnett
People ruin their lives by their foolishness.
The world’s first electronic general-purpose computer, ENIAC, unveiled in 1945, at the cost of $6,300,000 in today’s money, weighed twenty-seven tons and could perform 385 calculations per second. Your smartphone can execute more than 2,000,000,000 (yes, that’s with a “b”) calculations per second.
The phone in your pocket or purse had more capacity than NASA’s total computing power in 1969 when Neil Armstrong became the first human to put boots on the moon.
All that power and almost unlimited information at your fingertip are exhilarating.
But it’s depressing to see a couple in a restaurant, totally engrossed in a five-and-a-half-inch lifeless device and ignoring a five-and-a-half-foot living human – not saying one word to each other.
And it’s distressing that statistics reveal the leading cause of deaths of teenage drivers is texting.
Addiction to drugs is a bad thing.
So is an addiction to a smartphone.

Anxiety is common for everyone, to warn us of danger and motivate us to take action. When it creates panic or immobilizes us, it is harmful to our health. If we faithfully give God top priority in our lives, we can rest assured that He will address our needs.
Thanks to Daniel Boorman for leading the singing last Sunday in Colin’s absence.
We appreciate the Wagner Family donating some of the flowers from Sonny’s funeral. Beautiful arrangements that brightened the auditorium last Sunday.
Mariana Long is safely back home after her summer’s work in Northern Ireland. Her nephew Kirk Woltman was in services last Sunday, along with his wife and mother-in-law.
Allen and Mikey Isbell are in Tyler this weekend for the Isbell siblings’ yearly reunion.
Mary Sue and husband John Scott are hosting. Sister, Lacreta, and husband, Jack Scott, are in from California. (John Scott and Jack Scott are not brothers!) His brother, John Paul, has come from Seattle. A great way to spend a weekend!
