Blessings: Name Them One by One by Joe Barnett

We…always mention you in our prayers. I Thess. 1:2

In a recent essay, my friend Gene Shelburne gives a tip of the hat to the grand old hymn Count Your Blessings, but he fears we overlook the hymn’s advice to “name them one by one”.

Some of the petitions Shelburne heard when he was a youngster he labels “en masse” prayers. “Bless all the people who are hungry and hurting the world over.” But “Nobody ever suggested,” he laments, “that we pray specifically for the crippled veteran Tommy who sat and begged every Monday at the west door of the J.C.Penney store.” Or for “widow Thompson on Clay Street.”

This seasoned minister says that prayer took on new meaning for him when he “quit praying in generalities and began making specific requests to the Lord for specific people.”   He wisely counsels us to do the same.

Today when you pray, see faces and cite names.

We encourage you to fill out a visitor card and put it in the collection plate. We appreciate your visit.

Today’s Sermon: Allen’s sermon: Isaiah 1:18

The Adult Class: Bill Nunnally will teach start a new series this Sunday. Title: “Early Church to Early Reformation”

Tuesday Ladies Class: 10:00 a.m.

Keep in Prayer!
John Bixby, a former member, recently had knee surgery. Katie responded this week with this message: “John is getting around better.                                                     You know, all the places we have lived, Galveston and Broadway is home.”

Remember to pray for the West Fwy. Church of Christ in White Settlement, TX, outside Ft. Worth. Recently a gunman shot and killed two members during communion.

It was so good to see Alice Williams in services Sunday. She had been in UTMB for several days and received a pacemaker. Alice is doing well. Keep her in your prayers.

Chris Garvin’s grandmother, Bobbie Williamson, passed away this week in Granbury, TX. Our sympathy for this family.

In the light of the latest church shootings around the country, it has been decided that the front doors will be locked 10 minutes after services start.

This applies to both Wednesday and Sunday services. Someone will be present at the door to unlock it for late come                                                                                                       This is for everyone’s safety and peace of mind.

Young Professionals Group!
The Broadway Young Professionals group is looking to grow. For those interested in Bible studies, hangouts, and growing the church please join the chat group on Band (it’s an app). For any questions, please see Linda Stevens. God Bless and Happy New Year!

Several have asked for Teresa Fleury’s current address. She now lives in cold West Texas. Address: 6409 College Avenue, Amarillo, TX, 79109. She recently had a visit from Gracie, Dakota, and Sierra Adams. They had a side trip to Canyon, TX. Fun, fun, fun!

Have you noticed our beautiful floors? We appreciate the work that Donnie Walker does twice a year to keep them shining and fresh. You may find this interesting: the light brown and black swirls were unintentional. They are the remnants of the original glue used in the installation of the blue tile! After IKE the concrete floor was ground down and green dye applied. The result is much like the Gulf of Mexico (sand, tarballs, & water). Very appropriate for an Island. We think it’s beautiful and visitors never fail to notice and compliment our floors!!!

Natalie Freed sent a text from New Mexico Children’s Home saying that this has been a great year for them. Broadway helped with that!

Visitor for January 5, 2020!Terry Vaughn: Galveston, TX (Terry has recently moved here from Weatherford. He is employed by Truly Nolen Pest Control.)
