Listen Up by Joe Barnett

Ears that hear and eyes that see –
the Lord has made them both. Proverbs 20:12

B.R. was a great guy and a super successful businessman. Misjudging his seeming focus on the lesson, I called on him to comment, yanking him out of a comma-like state. Embarrassed, he said, “Joe, I’m so sorry, I was thinking about a project over in Scurry County.”

I know the feeling – I’ve been in assemblies where my body was present, but my mind wasn’t.

In personal relationships, I’ve also been in that boat: there, but not there; present in body, but absent in mind; hearing, but not listening. This bumper sticker caught my attention: “My wife – or daughter – said I don’t listen to her.”

In one-on-ones nothing is more disrespectful than not listening.

The self-centered are lousy listeners.

Bob Roland and Ann were planning to be with us last Sunday, but Bob spent Saturday night in the ER. He experienced a TIA, but is recovering at home.
Dean’s granddaughter, Sara, remains hospitalized in Temple. Keep this family in your prayers.

Thank You!
I want to express my appreciation to the Broadway family for the wonderful party for my 90th birthday. A special thanks to all the ladies who made this possible. Love to all, Margaret.

Thanks to Daniel Boorman for leading singing last Sunday.
Zosia Brethauer, Dean’s niece, is visiting from Temple. Dean is enjoying the companionship and home cooking!
Happy Birthday to Duncan Pharis!

Today, my friend Jim Deloney is leading singing. Jim is a leader among the Churches of Christ. Also, he is well-known as a “Cowboy Poet”. He and Iris Speed have one thing in common. Both were friends to the late Don Williams, who was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Iris and Don attended church together in Portland, TX. He was an elder in the Church of Christ in Tennesse.

So far, the plastic containers for the coat drive are empty. We only have one more week to contribute coats for the
Spring Branch Church of Christ. This outreach serves persons of all ages. This year’s event is scheduled for October 26th and November 2nd. There is a need for all types of winter outerwear: coats, sweaters, wind-breakers, sweat suits of all sizes, weights and types. There is a strong need for children’s sizes, especially small sizes.
Jim Culpepper, who was very supportive of Broadway’s rebuilding program after Hurricane IKE, is asking for our help. Let’s join in and do our part for this effort!
Both new and gently used (clean) clothing is appreciated. To contribute bring your donated items to the church building beginning next Sunday, September 29th, through Sunday, October 20th. There will be plastic containers located in the room left of the pulpit. For additional information see Mikey.
